Some amps are sensitive and difficult to control the reverb on. A good starting point is twice the original resistor value.

I've used a 12AU7 self-split driving a small "Universal Output Transformer" that I had 12a7 around, and it seemed to work better than paralleling the two triodes and driving the same transformer SE.
